Saxon Silver Penny (R2470/12)

This Saxon silver penny was minted under Aethelred II between 979-1016 C.E in Lewes. It depicts the king facing left in full armour and radiate helmet on obverse, hence this issue is known as the Helmet Type. On reverse there is a double line cross ending with crescents in each angle and a trefoil of pellets. The inscription reads "EDELRED REX ANGL. NEREPINEM.O LEPE".
